September
is here and with it bring some excellent fishing. The
fall mullet run is in full swing inside the Lagoons
here on the Space Coast. Hoards of small finger size
mullet are flooding the grass flats making top water
fishing at it's prime. My main focus will be the Indian
River Lagoon this month for tarpon and snook. Snook
season open this month and many keeper fish are being
found around the mangrove channels and back waters.
Tarpon are thick right now in the same areas with fishing
pushing 60 pounds. Large sea trout can be found around
the spoil islands early in the morning crashing the
pods of mullet. The fall also marks the redfish spawn.
They come back onto the shallow flats to breed in massive
schools of 500 to 1,000 fish. This usually occurs some
time in August and lasts till the end of September and
even the middle of October.
These
fish will average between 40 to 50 inches and weight
from 35 to 45 pounds! Night fishing will also be great
this month around the full moon. Big snook and tarpon
will be found around lighted docks. The best part is
you'll have the fish all to yourself. Hurricane Irene
past of the coast here in Central Florida throwing a
strong storm surge causing the Lagoons to rise over
night allowing us to fish in new area's.
